Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Scholarship Fund
The Dr. Helen Fleming Stone Scholarship is the highest honor and largest scholarship bestowed on a National Art Honor Society student by the Georgia Art Education Association. Dr. Stone established and built the scholarship through diligent hard work and tireless effort. As an artist she was a gifted sculptor and potter, so she sold her work to fund the scholarship. By 2006, she had raised the impressive sum of $60,000 – one pot at a time. Following her death in 2007, GAEA assumed responsibility for assisting the Stone family with the fundraising efforts, hosting a silent auction of donated artwork by GAEA members and their students. The scholarship endowment has grown to more than $88,000 and will continue assisting Georgia’s young gifted artists in their studies for many generations to come.
Dr. Stone set up the scholarship program with specific guidelines. Each year high school seniors who are members of the National Art Honor Society submit a portfolio of their work during the Georgia NAHS State Convention for judging by a panel of GAEA officers. Full scholarship program requirements can be found on the GAEA website: http://www.gaea-artforall.org/2012-national-art-honor-society-conference.php
It was Dr. Stone’s desire that the formal presentation of the scholarship money take place at the GAEA Fall Conference awards banquet, which continued until the growth of GAEA and its awards program necessitated the establishment of a separate event. Since 2007, the Helen Fleming Stone Scholarship Reception and Silent Auction, which has since become a Fall Conference tradition, has been an annual gathering to honor the scholarship recipient and continue the fundraising efforts.
All Georgia students, teachers, and other artists are invited to donate pottery and art for the auction, which will take place from 11:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at the GAEA state conference in the Augusta, Ga. The silent auction will take place simultaneously during lunch (11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) with closing bids being received near the conclusion of lunch.
To donate, contact Dr. Dan DeFoor at 678-524-4499 or [email protected].
Teachers planning to attend the state conference may also bring their work and that of their students to the conference registration desk.
